On ‘Togetherness’

In case you haven’t been watching, you need to catch up on Togetherness, the new HBO show written by the Duplass Brothers and starring Mark Duplass, Amanda Peet, Melanie Lynskey and Steve Zissis. The season finale was on last night, so if you haven’t started, you’re in the perfect position to binge watch! (I’m jealous.)

The show focuses on four people in their mid-30s who are working to reconcile their hopes and dreams with the current state of their personal and professional lives. At times, Togetherness is sweet and endearing; other times it’s crushingly realistic. I love it!

Truth be told, I was hooked on the show from the start, but a recent episode sealed the deal. With childcare arranged for the day, Brett and Michelle (played by Mark Duplass and Melanie Lynskey) organize their friends for what turns into a competitive game of Kick the Can.

Without sharing any spoilers, this episode brought me straight back to my childhood, where I spent summers in Maine (and Massachusetts) playing epic rounds of Kick the Can with my cousins. That game is intense! It also requires strategy and, well, togetherness to triumph. It’s a great analogy for the show—and clearly, it means the Duplass brothers grew up on the same game. Good people!

Is anyone else watching? If you are, let’s discuss!
